While some students across the city head back to school in person today, others will be starting classes from behind their computer screens at home.

At M.S. 88 in Park Slope, the doors won't be opening for students for a week and a half but they already have welcome back signs up, ready for kids and teachers.

It's back to school in person for 3K and pre-K students, as well as all kids at District 75 schools and for students with disabilities. Meanwhile, older kids will start virtual learning from home today with in-person dates coming through the next two weeks.

The city has already pushed back the first day of school from Sept. 10 and has hired thousands of new teachers. However, at M.S. 88, concerns grew as it had one of the first teachers to test positive for coronavirus while schools were preparing for classes to begin.

In an open letter from teachers, they criticized the city’s school reopening plan and said more needed to be done to keep school communities safe and healthy, especially with teachers testing positive at other schools too. The city said they deployed their Test and Trace team and are following all other protocol they set out.

M.S. 88, as well as all other middle schools, high schools and secondary schools in the city are slated to re-open for in person learning on Oct. 1.
