Senators were formally sworn in as jurors for the second impeachment of former
President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
A total of 45 out of 50 Republicans on the Senate voted in favor of an effort
to dismiss the impeachment trial altogether.
“Shame on these angry, unhinged partisans who are putting forth this sham
impeachment, deranged by hatred of the former president,” says Kentucky Sen.
Rand Paul.
There is concern among Democrats that a conviction on the charge of “incitement
of insurrection” against the former president is unlikely, but they are pushing
forward with the trial.
“It’s not something you can sweep underneath the rug,” says Michigan Sen. Gary
Peters.
“You have to bring it forward.”
Officials say Sen. Patrick Leahy, who is presiding over the impeachment
proceedings, was taken to the hospital out of an abundance of caution.
Leahy is home from the hospital today.
