Senior center offering a safe space amid spike in hate crimes against Asian Americans
The Salvation Army’s Bensonhurst Senior Center is offering community members a safe space as the city continues to see an increase in anti-Asian attacks.
The NYPD says there are 33 reported hate crimes against Asians in just the first three months of 2021, compared to 11 around the same time last year.
Maureen and Ricky Ki have been running the center since 2014. They allow its hundreds of members to socialize and partake in activities.
They say the space is needed now more than ever to give their community a place of refuge and comfort.
They are also hoping for more dialogue between local leaders and community members in hopes to prevent future anti-Asian attacks.
