Election Day brought some big and historic wins for Democrats across New York.
There were some heated races Tuesday night with lively viewing parties and spirited speeches after wins for the left.
Breaking records, progressive Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won New York’s 14th Congressional District becoming the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. She defeated Republican Anthony Pappas, winning 78 percent of the vote and becoming the first person of color to represent the district.
After upsetting incumbent Jeff Klein in the Democratic primaries earlier this year, Alessandra Biaggi has won the 34th District state Senate seat. At her watch party in Morris Park, she stressed that health care and other reforms are at the top of her list when she takes office next year.
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has been reelected, defeating Republican Chele Farley, as many thought she would. Gillibrand was the favorite and closed out the race winning with 66 percent of the votes.
All three women say they have a lot to do once they get into office, or are back in office, and that they can't wait to get to work.
