‘She deserved to live.’ NY mother calls on governor to back Kyra’s Law on 7th anniversary of toddler’s murder

Franchetti’s 2-year-old, Kyra Franchetti, was killed by her father, who then killed himself, during his visitation in 2016.

A mother and family court activist is now calling on the governor to back a proposed bill in her daughter’s name - on the seventh anniversary of the toddler’s death during a court-approved visit.

“She deserved to live. She deserved to celebrate her third birthday, her ninth birthday, her 25th birthday,” said Jacqueline Franchetti.

Franchetti’s 2-year-old, Kyra Franchetti, was killed by her father, who then killed himself, during his visitation in 2016.

Franchetti, who is from Long Island, says she warned the court that the child’s father was abusive but says he was granted access to the little girl anyway. Franchetti says she wants Kyra’s Law passed to prevent what happened to her daughter and others since Kyra’s death from happening to anyone else.

“She should be alive. She deserved to live like the other 22 children in New York who have been horrifically murdered by their own parent due to the failings of New York state's horrible family court system,” said Franchetti.

Kyra’s Law would provide training for judges and prioritize child safety during custody cases. It’s sponsored in the Senate by Sen. James Skoufis (D).

Franchetti joined Skoufis, officials and other nationally recognized family court activists to raise awareness to the reform bill in Manhattan Thursday.

News 12 reached out to the governor’s office for information about whether she supports Kyra’s Law but hasn’t heard back.
