A sidewalk on Liebig Avenue in Riverdale was upended by a tree, forcing pedestrians to either walk through it or go around it by walking into the street.
"I have three young children, and the curb is extremely dangerous and hard to manage with little kids and with a stroller," said Diana Babbitt, who lives down the street from the damaged sidewalk.
News 12 also spoke with Joseph Greene, who lives right next to the damaged portion of the sidewalk.
"This street does not have any speed bumps and it's a two-way street. So, people come flying down the street, especially at night," Green said. "It can be extremely dangerous."
Green said he's been living in his home for about nine years, and this sidewalk has increasingly become worse over time. He expressed frustration and anxiety regarding potential injuries to himself or others. He wants to prevent any injuries and potential lawsuits that can occur.
The Parks Department wrote to Greene back in January saying, "Your site has been rated 76 out of 100. This does not rate highly enough to be repaired by NYC Parks at this time. You may request a new inspection in 3 years or hire a contractor to complete repair. For more info, visit nyc.gov/parks/treework."
News 12 reached out to the Parks Department for comment but has not yet heard back.
Council Member Eric Dinowitz's office is aware of this and said it's working with the city to come up with a solution.
