Residents at NYCHA's Sotomayor Houses in Soundview said sidewalks were still covered by snow a day after a major blizzard, despite a city deadline requiring property owners to clear paths by 8:30 p.m. the night before.

"It's a slushy mess," said Sheyla, who lives in the Sotomayor Houses. "I'm scared and I had to take a lot of precaution."

June Richards said she planned to walk to the grocery store but turned back after seeing the conditions.

"This is terrible. It's not good," she said. "Let me take my behind back up there, I ain't going nowhere."

Others brought up concerns about the danger, especially for older residents or people using strollers or wheelchairs.

"I'm not at the age where these bones knit back so nicely," said Kenneth Imanuel. He said he won't be walking on any unplowed sidewalks.

After News 12 reached out to NYCHA, crews were seen clearing walkways. A spokesperson for NYCHA sent us the following statement:

"NYCHA staff have made good progress clearing snow from Sotomayor's sidewalks, entryways, pathways and parking lots following yesterday's record snowfall. Sotomayor Houses is one NYCHA's largest developments, encompassing over 30 acres, and staff are continuing with snow removal throughout the day today. "

A source from NYCHA told News 12 they expect all walkways to be clear by the end of the day.
