Activists organized a makeshift toy store in South Brooklyn to ensure families will not go without presents this Christmas.

South Brooklyn Mutual Aid transformed New York City Councilman Carlos Menchaca's Fourth Avenue office into a winter wonderland Saturday.

The group was formed in March during the pandemic and says they wanted a way to help families that didn't feel like charity.

"Often in order to receive benefits or charity, you have to bring children and show need and we wanted to instead offer dignity," says Whitney Hu.

Hu says she wants people to pick a few toys and put them under the tree.

The group is still accepting donations of new toys or gently used clothes.

The winter wonderland will be open every day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until the day before Christmas Eve.

Families can sign up on the group's website and will be given a time to come pick out toys, clothes and more.
