A new documentary will tell the story of a young Bronx man who killed himself following his release from three years of imprisonment at Rikers Island without being charged.
As News 12 has reported, Kalief Browder was 16 years old when he was accused of stealing a backpack. Rather than taking a plea deal for a crime he insisted he did not commit, he spent hundreds of days in solitary confinement and endured numerous beatings from guards and adult prisoners.
The family says Browder killed himself because the imprisonment traumatized him.
Browder's mother, Venida Browder, died earlier this year after a heart attack. Family members say she died of a broken heart.
The documentary will air on Spike TV in March.
