Snow has started to change over to sleet in the southern areas of the Lower Hudson Valley, such as Westchester County.
Mainly, snow is expected to continue until roughly midnight tonight. The good news, the snow will not be nearly as heavy as Sunday afternoon.
However, with the snow and sleet that we will experience, we can expect additional snow accumulations through the end of this event.
Aside from the snow and sleet, please be aware that whiteout conditions will persist through the evening. Wind gusts are expected to be near 30 mph, especially in Westchester County, tonight. These conditions are not expected to improve until early Monday morning.
Lastly, temperatures will remain below freezing through the night and the next several days.
Snow melt will be minimal at best through the week, and the icy conditions from the sleet will keep roads, driveways, and walkways icy. SNOW TOTALS: Widespread 9-13 inches of snowfall has been reported by 4:30 p.m. . Additional snow totals of 2-3 inches are to be expected by the end of this event. Locally, more is likely. Areas with sleet accumulations will make it difficult to get an accurate measurement.
DANGEROUS TRAVEL AND CLEANUP: Going forward, the snow will become much more difficult to manage and clean up. Please use extreme caution! This is turning into a heavy cement-like mixture of snow and sleet on the ground. Roads continue to be treacherous, and the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous as ice builds up on top of the snow. Please let road crews do their jobs and avoid travel as best as you can.
LOOKING AHEAD: While no major additional storms are on the horizon just yet, this snow, ice, and tricky travel is not going anywhere all week! Arctic air will be affecting all Long Islanders this week, with high temperatures mostly in the 20s and nighttime lows in the single digits to low teens. There will be a few additional periods of snow showers on Monday, which can lead to some additional light accumulation on top of the ice and snow on the ground now.
