A teenager has died as a result of the injuries he suffered in a fire in Belmont last weekend.

The fire broke out Sunday morning at the Twin Parks Complex on Harden Street.

Lucas Silverio, 19, was trying to save 3-year-old Yasleen McDonald from the fire. His family told News 12 that he was due for an operation to remove damaged skin from the burns, but there were complications. They say Silverio was suffering from burns covering 80% of his body.

His cousin says Silverio was home when the fire broke out at Twin Park Towers and noticed the toddler was alone crying. That was when he ran back to help her.

Both were taken to the hospital in critical condition. McDonald died Monday, according to family members. Silverio died Wednesday.

France McDonald says he is dealing with so much pain from losing his only child, but says he cannot stop thinking about the hero who tried to save his daughter's life.

Relatives told News 12 that the toddler got separated from her mother as they were trekking through the heavy smoke trying to escape. They say she did not live in the building, but was with her mother visiting relatives.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but the FDNY believes it began in the trash compactor on the 14th floor of the 16-story building.
