Looking for a way to cool off? Starting today New Yorkers will be allowed to swim at New York City beaches when lifeguards are on duty.
For those ready to enjoy the water, Mayor Bill de Blasio says New Yorkers must remember to bring a mask, in addition to sunscreen and towels.
In Coney Island, the beaches have not been empty despite coronavirus concerns.
Last week, News 12 cameras caught people out enjoying the weather, hanging out on the boardwalk and some people swimming, even though the mayor had said swimming was not allowed prior to today.
There are some rules in place. The mayor is asking that if you come to the beach that you only come with household members. You’re advised to maintain six feet of distance between you and others when swimming, hanging out in the sand and on the boardwalk. Beach-goers must also try and keep those beach blankets and chairs set up at least 10 feet away from others.
The mayor also announced Tuesday that some New York City pools will be opening for the summer.
In the Bronx, Crotona Pool in Crotona Park, Mullaly in Concourse Village and Hafen in Baychester.
In Brooklyn, Sunset Park Pool, Betsey Head Pool in Bed-Stuy and Kosciuszko Pool in Brownsville.
A total of 15 pools across the city are expected to open by Aug. 1.
