Toxocara, tiny worms that live in animals’ muscles and digestive systems, have been discovered in parks across the five boroughs, according to a study.
Although the worms are not easily transmitted to humans, experts say they can spread to people through their pet’s feces or if they consume infected dirt.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 14% of the population has been exposed to the parasite and estimates that nearly 70 people, most of which are children, have become blinded by the toxocaraias.
To prevent infection, Dr. Rojielio Meija recommends that people deworm their pets, be mindful of what they touch outside, and remember to wash their hands before eating.
Dr. Meija was part of the research team that discovered the tiny, infectious worms.
