News 12 Storm Watch Team Meteorologist Allan Nosoff says a strengthening cold front will produce a thump of heavy, windswept rain Sunday afternoon. Showers are expected as soon as mid-morning before the front arrives.
RAIN: 0.5-1.0" of rain expected, isolated 1-1.5" possible in the heaviest of downpours.
WIND: Wind will pick up through the afternoon, with gusts of 30-45+ mph expected with the heaviest rain and into the evening. This is the worst hazard. 25-45 MPH, especially at the coast.
IMPACTS: The combination of heavy rain and high wind is a recipe for significant travel disruptions with the expected busy post-holiday traffic. Poor visibility & driving conditions likely during the heaviest rain/wind. Watch for flood/puddle-prone roads. Higher crosswinds expected on bridges & overpasses. Any remaining leaves are likely blown off trees and make sure to secure any loose holiday decorations. Minor beach erosion is expected during high tide Sunday night for ocean-facing beaches/communities in Brooklyn due to the south wind.
WHEN: Showers arrive around 10AM. Best chance for heavy rain between 2-4PM. Showers linger through 7PM. Wind gusts remain into Sunday night.
MONDAY: Partly to mostly sunny. Remaining breezy with 15-25 mph gusts. Highs dropping to 53. Lows down to 37.
TUESDAY: Sunny and tranquil. Highs near 48. Lows around 43.
WEDNESDAY: Partly to mostly cloudy. Showers possible during the second half of the day. Highs surge to 61. Lows down to 43 with showers ending by midnight.
THURSDAY: Becoming sunny and breezy. Highs only near 48. Lows down to 35.
LATE WEEK: Pretty typical for the start of December. Highs near 50. Lows in the mid 30s. Staying dry.
