A geophysicist said Thursday that Hurricane Harvey dumped so much rain on Houston that it actually sank by 2 inches, so cadets at SUNY Maritime will set sail to prop up recovery efforts.
FEMA has activated the school's Empire State VI training vessel for a 30-day relief mission. The ship will set sail for Texas loaded with donated supplies, then serve up to 600 first responders by providing housing, electricity, food and water.
FEMA could increase the deployment by an additional 60 days.
Maritime's president says he and his cadets are also prepared to help with Hurricane Irma relief.
