Congregants of the Bronx Jewish Center were met with dried-up eggs and shells Tuesday morning after a group of people emptied a carton of eggs on the front doors of the synagogue.
Surveillance footage captured at 11:50 p.m. Monday revealed the disturbing incident, including a man seen grabbing a pink carton of a dozen eggs and throwing them at the front doors of the center.
Rabbi Saadia Pewzner tells News 12, "We're living in terrible, trying times, I right away thought about this being tied to what's going on abroad. As a community, we've never received such acts of hate."
Almost 24 hours later, dried egg yolks and cracked shells cling to the walls and ground by the synagogue's front doors. Rabbi Pewzner emphasized that the Bronx Jewish Center has faced vandalism before, making this incident familiar.
"Unfortunately, the amount of hate that we've been receiving, the acts of vandalism, etc., as you know, is compounded, times 10," he says.
According to recent statistics released by the NYPD, hate crimes have seen a 5.6% increase from last year. The rise in hate crimes has deeply unsettled the Jewish community.
"We are extremely concerned by the reported vandalism of the Bronx Jewish Center, especially at a time of rising antisemitism across the U.S.," said a representative from the Anti-Defamation League. "There is no place for hate in NYC."
Rabbi Pewzner and the congregation at the synagogue are urging anyone who recognizes the individuals seen in the surveillance video to immediately contact the police.
