Residents of Stevenson Commons in Soundview say its been over a month since mail has been delivered to the building.

Laquever Fryar said she and other neighbors were told they had to pick their mail up from the post office located at 1950 Lafayette Ave.

"It's ridiculous. You pay as much as you do to not have your mail delivered to your mailbox. That's kind of insane," said Fryar.

According to a letter on the mail service room door on Monday morning, USPS had deemed the room to be a safety and health hazard. They said the room used to sort the mail reached high temperatures because it had no air circulation.

Residents are informed to get their mail between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Fryar said she waited roughly 15 minutes in line at the post office on Monday to receive her mail from over the weekend.

"I'm not going to get today's mail, which is supposed to come today. I'm not going to get today's mail until tomorrow because they don't have it sorted out," Fryar said.

News 12 reached out to USPS about the situation.

"The Postal Service aims to deliver regularly for customers, but must also prioritize the safety and well-being of employees. Local postal officials have confirmed that there is an ongoing issue that is preventing USPS from delivering safely to these residents.

We look forward to a swift resolution, as this delivery inefficiency is not ideal for residents or the Postal Service. In the interim, residents must present identification and pick up their items at the local post office.
Once building managers resolve the matter, local postal officials should be notified so that the site can be inspected and delivery service can return to normal."

Stevenson Commons is managed by Dolphin Management. A spokesperson from the company released this statement to News 12:

"We take all safety concerns seriously, and the conditions in the mail sorting room were swiftly and thoroughly addressed as soon as building management was made aware of them. The United States Postal Service has inspected this room, and mail service has been restored.”
