Tenants living at 3940 Carpenter Ave. in Wakefield say their broken elevator is forcing them to climb multiple steps every day with no end in sight.

"I’ve called the super. I called the manager. I’m not getting a call back from the manager," said Maria Rivera, who has been living in the building for 20 years. She said the elevator has been down since Sunday night.

"They’re not telling us anything. They’re keeping me in the dark," she said. "I live on the fourth floor and it’s 75 steps to where I live. I’m asthmatic. I bear with it, but this shouldn’t be happening."

The elevator isn’t the only problem. Tenants said the front door is often broken, which puts their safety at risk.

"Anybody could come in and loiter or do whatever. And it’s scary sometimes," said another tenant. "You never know what’s going to happen."

News 12 reached out to the management company, FTERE, to address these concerns, but has not heard back yet.
