Mayor Eric Adams visited Rikers Island today.
The mayor says that 2,700 weapons have been seized from inmates so far this year, with stabbings down 63% since March.
This comes after a federal court endorsed the city’s plan to reform Rikers Island. Adams says all of these changes are part of his promise to make city jails safer for both inmates and staff.
The mayor also emphasized that 121 people have been rearrested for committing crimes while inside. They have been referred to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office to be prosecuted.
Adams did not discuss the eight deaths across city jails this year, including the two that happened this week.
The Legal Aid Society released a statement saying the following:
"The extraordinarily high death rate on Mayor Adams’ watch, and the suffering of all who are kept in abysmal conditions inside, are a humanitarian crisis that this Administration seems incapable of rectifying any time soon."
