Today marks nine years since Superstorm Sandy hit Long Island.

Sandy devastated communities across Nassau and Suffolk, flooding thousands of homes and leaving damage for miles.

Many communities are still trying to fully recover from the storm’s impact.

Island Park Mayor Michael McGinty says 99% of the village was underwater from Superstorm Sandy and billions of dollars were invested to bring communities like his back.

"We're still rebuilding," McGinty says. "We're still working on revitalization. We have businesses finally, in the last two years businesses have returned. New businesses have settled here and there is an economic growth."

Island Park resident Jessica Rasulo's home and street were underwater. Her house was ruined and everything that was in the downstairs portion of their house was lost.

Some homes have been lifted, but other neighborhoods still flood.

"Since Sandy it just seems like every time we get a flood, the water comes higher and higher," Rasulo says. "It's been a mess."

Susan Goldstone's Oceanside home is still uninhabitable. She says the property has dealt with permit problems, contractors who abandoned the job and other issues.

Goldstone says New York Rising is threatening to take back grant money for repairs since she is not in her home yet.

"I don't know how I am surviving to be honest," she says.

Numerous groups in Long Beach also gathered Friday to call on elected officials to support President Joe Biden's infrastructure plan, which they say is crucial in the ongoing recovery from the storm.

Superstorm Sandy caused $65 billion in damage across the United States, according to the National Hurricane Center.
