In May, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that there would be no online or virtual learning option for New York City schools this fall. Some Bronx parents aren't too happy about that decision amid rising concerns of the delta variant.
On Monday, parents marched to the United Federation of Teachers building in Manhattan to demand that the UFT support their push for a remote learning option this fall. The group says that with COVID-19 cases back on the rise, it's not safe yet for kids to go back to school.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Education, and it said in part, "Our young people cannot lose another year of in-person learning, which is why we are welcoming all students back on Sept. 13. Our multi-layered approach to safety has made schools among the safest places to be in the city."
The United Federation of Teachers union released a statement as well saying, "There is no substitute for in-person instruction. New York City educators want their students physically in front of them this fall. We are working with city and state officials and our own independent medical experts on what needs to be done to open schools safely."
