Three separate crashes took place in the span of 12 hours in Williamsburg. Vision Zero says they all took place in an area that some believe has been long-neglected.
All three of the crashes took place either on or in the vicinity of Broadway in Williamsburg.
Broadway between Kent and East New York avenues is a Vision Zero priority corridor and has been for almost a decade – yet the road still illicits fear from residents.
DOT data shows over 40 serious injuries occurred in the Broadway corridor between 2016 and 2020.
“I do not bike on Broadway,” said one resident. “There are really quick and easy changes we could make to make this road user-friendly for all road users.”
The road travels through several City Council districts, including that of Jennifer Gutierrez, who says that she and other elected officials think that the slow rollout of changes has been lethal.
The Department of Transportation provided the following statement regarding the recent string of crashes in Williamsburg:
“One traffic death is too many, and our thoughts are with the friends and family of the victim. A Vision Zero priority corridor, NYC DOT has completed several safety projects along Broadway in recent years, including the redesign of nine intersections and a plaza extension at Hooper Street—and is actively working on a project to implement at this location this year.”
