A Weston farm is helping hundreds of families put healthy meals on the table though a hidden gem tucked away in the back of Lachat Town Farm in Weston.
News 12 Connecticut's Lauren Fabrizi took a walk through the *Giving Garden.*
The Community Garden has been on the farm for about a decade. Right before the pandemic started, Terry Cho and her friend Christina, who both work at the garden, decided to donate some fruits and vegetables to the Weston Food Pantry.
Something that isn't very accessible to many food insecure families is the fresh food. The garden gives them shelf stable food that they're able to access.
Then once the pandemic hit, it meant it was time for another garden.
Thanks to thousands of dollars in donations from the public and a grant from the non-profit Sustainable Connecticut, the Giving Garden sprouted.
A year later, $3,000 pounds of food has been donated to not just the Weston Food Pantry, but to Person-to-Person too, which serves nearly 30,000 families in Fairfield County.
They are hoping to top that number next year.
"We're just going to keep growing more and buying more and hopefully next year we'll hit 5,000 pounds," says Lachat Town Farm commissioner Terry Cho.
During the off season, the farm will donate its eggs to local pantries.
