For the first time in 50 years, the Supreme Court has ended constitutional protections for abortion. This means states can now legally ban abortion. However, that’s not a move expected to see happen here in New York.

The decision was decided along ideological lines in 6-3 vote led by the conservative majority. This ruling comes down more than a month after a draft opinion from the Court was leaked that indicated it would make this decision. Around 25 states are expected to ban abortion, and 13 states already have trigger bans in place that are ready to go into effect.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed several laws that protect abortion patients and providers earlier this month.

Several recent opinion polls show that more than half of Americans support the right to an abortion in some form.

Reproductive rights advocates say states with abortion protections like New York will likely see an increase in out-of-state patients seeking abortions who are traveling from states where abortion is outlawed.
