A man was killed crossing the street in the Bronx Monday morning.

According to police, the 57-year-old man was crossing Soundview Avenue in the middle of the block when he was struck by a van around 4 a.m. He was taken to Jacobi Hospital where he died.

News 12 is told the accident was caught on surveillance video from a nearby laundromat.

A laundromat employee tells News 12 a telecom van, which was still on the scene hours after the incident was driving toward Rosedale Avenue when it struck a man. He says the driver is seen in the video going to get police who were near the corner for help. Police say the man stayed on the scene and there doesn't appear to be any criminality at this time.

An NYPD tow truck towed the van away. The windshield of the van was cracked, and the front of the vehicle was dented.

Transportation Alternatives says cars are being prioritized on our city streets.

"Every traffic death is preventable, and it starts when our city will prioritize human life over the convenience of drivers, this doesn’t mean taking cars away from people, that doesn’t mean completely reimagining our city all together, it simply means that we have to put human life first especially in the areas that have been continued to be left behind,” says Danny Harris, executive director of Transportation Alternatives.

The identity of the 57-year-old man who was killed has not yet been released, and the investigation is still ongoing.
