The City of Yonkers honored Detective Brian Menton on Friday by lighting the top of City Hall building in blue.

As Menton continues to recover following the shooting that left him injured, the community tries to heal and get back to normal.

For the past few days, residents who live on Elm Street told News 12 they were afraid to step out.

Some said they go home early while others said they avoid going outside altogether, especially at night.

"When the weather gets good, we're going to have a shooting on Elm Street," said Mayor Spano during Thursday's presser. He said he wants to change this Elm Street cycle, but not many are optimistic.

On Friday, residents told News 12 this is routine by now and that it's always been this way, but they each have their own way of staying safe.

Spano believes Yonkers residents deserve better.

"Ninety-nine percent of the people in that community are wonderful, loving people. It's these individuals that come in and set up shop," Spano said.

Spano said he plans to increase resources in the community that surrounds Elm Street. He wants to send in every department the city has to offer and improve residents quality of life.
