A plan to transform an area of Westchester Square into a pedestrian plaza is getting mixed reviews.
Community Board 10 recently approved a Department of Transportation plan that would transform the southwest corner of Westchester and East Tremont avenues into a public plaza.
The plan calls for eliminating a turning lane and expanding it into an outdoor sitting area for the public.
Opponents say the constant congestion and noise from the elevated train doesn't make the square an area where people would want to sit and relax. Some also say that an outdoor plaza will amplify an ongoing loitering problem from local high school students.
Work on the pedestrian plaza is scheduled to start next month.
