Two NYPD officers shot and killed a man who they say confronted them with a knife Monday night on 181st Street and Prospect Avenue.
Police responded to the scene around 7:40 p.m. after receiving a call that someone had been stabbed by a man at 2131 Prospect Ave.
However, when police arrived, they discovered that no one was actually injured – but a man was outside with a knife. Police say after he ignored their repeated demands for him to drop the military-style weapon, the two officers fired at the 52-year-old man, identified as Michael Hansford.
He was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.
News 12 was told that the incident may have been in response to a dispute between a landlord and a tenant. Police have not yet confirmed this information.
Authorities say that the officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras. There was no word on if the recordings would be released to the public.
