Police are working to help a Bronx man whose wheelchair was stolen earlier this month.

Officials say that a wheelchair belonging to Frankie Rodriguez was stolen on April 3 at Third Avenue and 167th Street, right next to a laundromat.

Rodriguez says that the battery on his wheelchair died while he was out at around 5:30 p.m., so he decided to lock it to a pole. The 52-year-old says he walked back to the shelter where he lives to seek help, but no one was available. The chair was gone when Rodriguez returned to retrieve it the next day.

Rodriguez says that he suffered a stroke in 2010 and can barely walk. He says that it is very difficult for him to get around without his wheelchair.

News 12 reached out to Independent Care System to see if they would replace Rodriguez' wheelchair.

The company said in a statement, "We have received the police report and will be replacing Mr. Rodriquez' wheelchair. Our members value their independence, and we're committed to ensuring they have the mobility devices needed to keep them moving and as independent as possible."

Police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information on who stole the wheelchair is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
