The NYPD School Safety Division created the Wonderfully Made Wig Program to help students stay out of trouble, and kids from Spring Creek Community School have finished a special project.

The program was developed three years ago, and involves using human hair bundles, needles and lots of thread to create wigs. Kids work on these wigs for four weeks, teaching them what patience and determination can create.

"I did not want them to believe that they were beautiful once they put the wig on. You are beautiful this is just something that you can do as an entrepreneur as a business or something that you can wear,” said Barbara Welch, commanding officer of the Community Outreach Unit. “It’s something that you can just enjoy as a therapeutic thing to do but you're beautiful. You're already wonderfully made."

Welch says the program is looking to take part in six more schools for the 2023-2024 school year.
