An arrest has been made in the deadly subway shooting that rocked Mount Eden Feb. 10, following a massive police operation outside a nearby apartment building where investigators believed the gunman was hiding.

The NYPD says 27-year-old Alberto Frias is now in custody, accused of fatally shooting 41-year-old Manhattan resident Adrian Dawodu inside the 170th Street subway station.

Video from inside the station captures the moment gunfire erupted, partially drowned out by the roar of passing trains as dozens of riders looked on in fear. Minutes later, first responders rushed into the station, frantically working to save Dawodu before carrying him out of the subway. He later died at a hospital.

Police say the investigation quickly led them to an apartment building at 1505 Townsend Ave., just two blocks from the subway station. That night, officers in bulletproof vests and carrying Assault Rifles swept the building for hours, bringing in K-9 units as they searched for the suspect, believing Frias was hiding inside.

“I’ve been living here for more than ten years,” said Anderson Moinacruz, who was on the opposite track when shots were fired. “What if he’s been living here with me the whole time?”

Investigators say Frias lives in that same building, but he was not located during the initial sweep. Detectives arrested him more than a week later and walked him out of the 44th Precinct in handcuffs.

Prosecutors say Frias is facing multiple charges, including murder and manslaughter. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years to life in prison.
