Residents in Woodlawn say large metal plates covering part of East 236th Street are creating constant noise and raising safety concerns as construction continues along the block.

The plates stretch from Martha Avenue to Vireo Avenue as part of a Con Edison gas main replacement project.

Neighbors said construction began about three to four weeks ago and, while they understand the need for the work, many are growing frustrated with its duration.

Residents told News 12 that vehicles passing over the plates create a loud clanging sound that can be heard throughout the day and night.

"Duh-don, duh-don, just like that," one resident said while describing the noise.

Catherine, who lives along the block, said the sound has become a constant presence in her home.

"Every night, in my living room, I hear it. It doesn't stop," she said.

Some neighbors also expressed concerns about safety, saying the metal plates can become slippery when wet. Others worry about their placement on a sloped section of the roadway.

Con Edison said the work is part of a project to replace gas mains and improve the safety and reliability of its gas system.

The utility company said construction is expected to continue through the end of July.

Residents say they recognize the importance of infrastructure upgrades but hope the work can be completed as soon as possible so the neighborhood can return to normal.
