Majority of Long Island students return to school today

A late Labor Day allowed many districts to start this week.

Most students across Long Island are heading back into the classroom today.

Many school districts opted to start before Labor Day because the holiday falls so late this year.

Districts are required by state law to hold at least 180 instructional days, so the earlier start is allowing extra flexibility throughout the rest of the year.

A new school year comes with an annual safety reminder.

Both Nassau County police and Suffolk County police are asking drivers to be extra careful, particularly this time of the year.

They're asking drivers to slow it down in school zones, watch for students walking and prepare to stop for buses with flashing lights.

Some kids can still relish the last few days of summer.

More than a dozen school districts don't start classes until next Tuesday or Wednesday after Labor Day.
