Driver fatally strikes pedestrian while trying to park in Hillsborough

A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a vehicle that was attempting to park near a building in Hillsborough early Thursday morning.

The incident took place at about 5:44 a.m. on Roycefield Road. According to police, officers responded to the area after receiving reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. When police arrived, the victim, identified as Vernon McLaughlin III, 52, of Whitehouse, was unresponsive. Officers began providing medical assistance before turning the victim over to EMS crews. He was transported to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Somerset, where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators determined that a driver was trying to park a vehicle next to a building when the victim was struck. The driver of the vehicle was a 64-year-old man from Hillsborough, police said in a statement.

The crash is being investigated by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and Hillsborough Township Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau.
