A group of animal rights activists in the Bronx says the borough has gone without a full-service animal center for too long.
With the backing of Community Board 7, the group is pushing to turn a former school building on Jerome Avenue in Norwood into a shelter.
They point to the large number of stray cats throughout the borough as something the proposed shelter could help fix.
The Jerome Avenue building has been vacant for two years. Before that, the Department of Environmental Conservation had cleaned it of toxins.
The nearest full-service shelter is the ASPCA's main location in Manhattan.
