The Department of Transportation announced its annual Dusk and Darkness campaign to keep drivers and pedestrians safe.
As daylight saving time comes to an end and the sky gets darker earlier, members of the DOT and NYPD officers are reminding drivers to slow down, to not cut corners and to look closely for pedestrians.
They say they have seen a decrease in accidents that they believe is a result of their initiative of getting out there and talking to people.
Officials with the DOT say they are also advising pedestrians to be proactive.
"We just need to explain to them how difficult it is for them to be seen and just ask them to do whatever they can to be seen," said Kim Wiley-Schwartz.
The DOT also announced their new "Alive at 25 Safety Program" for young drivers.
The initiative will be offered in 10 public high schools across the city and will put students through real-life scenarios both as drivers and passengers to teach them about safe driving.
The NYPD says they will also be focusing on the private garbage hauling industry, which is usually in operation during the overnight hours.
Since Sunday, they have inspected 128 garbage trucks and issued more than 400 criminal summonses and about 160 more moving summonses.
News 12 is told they have also towed five trucks that they say were not safe for the road.
