The FDNY responded to a four-alarm house fire in Bath Beach on Monday night.
The smoke covered the block for hours as firefighters battled the flames and got them under control at around 11 p.m. Firefighters say the flames started on the first floor and inflicted extensive damage.
Neighbors told News 12 that police and firefighters were called to the location days earlier because of squatters in the building. According to neighbors, the home has been abandoned for years.
As the cleanup continues outside the home, firefighters are waiting to secure the second floor of the building to make sure no one is inside.
It's unclear how the fire started.
