The owners of a newly opened Ocean County restaurant are paying the price for a video posted on social media.
Taylor Sam’s in Bay Head recently shared a video on TikTok reacting to a customer saying their breakfast is too expensive.
“We post some funny videos, some stuff that is a little edgier than some other stuff,“ said Scott Spivak, co-owner of Taylor Sam’s. “It’s just all in fun, really, just trying to drive people to the restaurant.”
In the video, an employee is seen speaking to co-owner Dawn Spivak, saying, “I just had two rich people say that they’re never coming back here because our prices are double than [the former restaurant’s] prices were.”
Dawn then responds, “Our food is double the quality and double the flavor, so they can go and double **** (expletive) off.”
The now-deleted TikTok, which was shared on other social media platforms, has sparked a heated conversation online.
Some comments go as far as harassing the mom-and-pop shop with threats and derogatory comments.
The owners have issued a public apology and are still expressing their regret.
“We're a family-owned business. It’s my husband, myself, my mother, my children,” Dawn Spivak, co-owner of Taylor Sam’s. “We've been in business for 13 years. All we care about is being good food, good service, and a clean restaurant with smiles on our faces.”
The video was posted during Taylor Sam’s busy grand opening while one of their children came down with a fever. The owners said they typically would have been more cautious of what they allowed their marketing team to share online.
“We told them this one time, ‘Listen, we're super busy. We trust you.’ And that backfired. But it was satirical. It wasn't meant to hurt anybody,” said Scott Spivak.
Taylor Sam’s also has a location in Brick Township and Florida. It produced the content with Edgly Marketing Group.
