There's an urgent reminder tonight about the bitter cold in the Hudson Valley. Emergency officials are urging people to layer up.
For some, it was a welcomed return of snow in Yonkers Monday.
"I love it, it's awesome. It's winter, right"," says Yonkers resident Andy Guzman.
The cold though is another story.
"It's too cold," says Yonkers resident Veronica Rodriguez.
The frigid temperatures not only have some Yonkers neighbors irritated but emergency crews on high alert.
"It's very easy to lose track of how cold you are actually getting so we have to be very aware of frostbite/hypothermia, all those things that come with the cold," says Matt Franklin, the director of New York state's Office of Emergency Management.
Officials are urging you to stay layered up and check on your neighbors.
On top of that, emergency officials say now is the time to take action to protect your home. A big part of that is preventing your pipes from freezing.
"Leave the cabinet doors open so it gets heat in there, leave the faucets dripping overnight when the temperatures drop, familiarize yourself with your shutoff valves," says Phil Whitbeck who is with Lightspeed Restoration of Orange County.
Another important reminder is to be on the lookout for slick conditions on the sidewalks and roads.
