A Bronx actress is making her way from the Boogie Down to the silver screen in Netflix’s new show.
Soundview-native Naiya Ortiz stars in one of the top 10 trending show's in the nation on Netflix's “Grand Army."
“A show that takes place in NYC it’s so easy to relate to because this was me four years ago,” says Ortiz.
The series shows the true New York City high school experience, based in Brooklyn at Grand Army High School. The school itself isn't real, but according to Ortiz, the stories the characters tell are. She tells News 12 her character, Sonia Cruz, has a true New York state of mind.
“What I love about playing her, she's very big on using her voice. Say what you have to say, she isn't into animosity. She tells you how she feels. A lot of New Yorkers relate to that mentality and that type of attitude. I love being able to play that,” says Ortiz.
The show also discusses sensitive topics and struggles teens often face, including coping with sexuality, racism and financial burdens all while trying to fit in.
“So relatable, and someone can think she reminds you of a daughter or yourself when you were young. That's how real conversations start. The things we show is going to start a dialogue and that's the point. We are going to get people talking about this,” says Ortiz.
Ortiz tells News 12 she's thankful for her Bronx roots that she believes helped her land her first big break.
“Being already from the city, knowing how to take the train, knowing what it's like seeing groups of people, you just know you're way around. It definitely did help,” says Ortiz.
