Bronx residents were out cleaning the community Friday in honor of hip-hop's 50th birthday.
The community has seen so many changes since that genre was born half a century ago, but the one thing that seems to remain the same is its love for hip-hop. That’s why members of the community say they are bonding over that love to beautify the borough.
It’s a purposeful passion that for which they’re even willing to get dirty. Friday’s event is part of a series hosted by the Sanitation Foundation, featuring six events around the borough paying homage to the people and places that helped create the genre all those years ago.
Multiplatinum recording producer King Amadeus was among the volunteers who cleaned up the community.
"They are shining examples of people who made it, but still remain ingrained in their community and still care about their community on a daily basis," says Johari James, outreach coordinator for Sanitation Foundation. "That is one of the messages that we send here that no matter how big or famous you may be, it's very important to show your community that example."
For those who followed that example Friday, they received a thank you gift - a voucher for two tickets to a Yankees game.
