"Bronx Girls Skate" hosted their fifth anniversary at River Avenue Skate Park.
The cloudy forecast did not stop community members from arriving at River Avenue Skate Park to celebrate a milestone five years in the making, honoring skateboards and girl power.
"It didn't make me feel like I was living in someone else's shadow," said Cookiez Mayers, member of Bronx Girls Skate.
Mayers has been a member of "Bronx Girls Skate" for two years. She says the organization empowered her to continue her passion for skateboarding.
"Once I met them, I realized there were a lot more women. And I thought in the Bronx and even other boroughs who skateboard and share the same experiences with me, and it made me so much more comfortable with skateboarding," she said.
The fifth annual celebration included giveaways, prizes and a moment for all skate-lovers and their supporters to uplift one another in the community.
The founders, Mel and Kava, shared with News 12 that at the core of what they do is inspiration, something they have done consecutively for the last five years no matter rain or shine.
