One Bronx native carried out their high school dream to life and now has their luxury footwear collection on shelves at Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street.
Over 20 years ago, designer Sherwayne Mahoney’s luxury shoe collection, ‘Things To Come,’ was merely an idea created as a high school project. To Mahoney, the dream was much more.
"I would walk by the Macy's windows, and I would say 'I need to be in that window, I need to be in that store. How do I make it happen?" says Mahoney.
Last week, the luxury designer debuted his collection’s sandals, pumps and stilettos at the Macy’s store on Herald Square in Manhattan.
Mahoney says the journey into commercial retail wasn’t easy. He has been in the world of fashion since 1994, studying at Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, but never feeling represented in luxury fashion.
“So for me, growing up in the Bronx… why can’t I give my version of what luxury is,” said Mahoney. “Especially if I’m studying with the great companies and working with the great companies."
Mahoney says there is still more to come, and that he plans on expanding his brand with luxury handbags and cologne. He hopes to expand to other luxury stores citywide.
