Council Member Marjorie Velazquez presented a check worth nearly $1.4 million on Monday for major improvements to two firehouses and an EMS station in the city.
Velazquez is allocating $125,000 to FDNY Engine 70/Ladder 53 for a brand-new overhead door, to EMS Station 20 with $68,000 for new high-speed doors and $1.2 million to Engine 97 for a brand-new generator. The funding comes as part of the 2024 fiscal budget.
After heavy rainfall Friday that caused destruction to many communities across the city, the council member said, "We have to make sure that we are thinking and supporting communities, especially when it comes to generators."
Velazquez says members of the community should feel welcome to access the fire station during natural disasters if they lose power.
