Bronx officials take stand against elder abuse

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. pledged his full support in protecting those who can't protect themselves Friday. His pledge comes ahead of Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
"We are here for you, we are here to help you, the people here with me today are here to provide information and that help," said Diaz Jr.
Currently, 1 in 10 New York seniors are victims of elder abuse, a statistic District Attorney Darcel Clark, New York City Department for the Aging Commissioner Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez and the NYPD are actively trying to combat.
"Recently, we've seen some horrific incidents which elderly individuals were robbed, beaten or taken advantage of. And I will assure you, when we catch those individuals, we're going to hold them accountable," says Clark.
The NYPD has easily accessible protection tips for seniors, including walking in well-lit places, using as few credit cards as possible and never carrying a bag across your waist.
