With more than 1,600 COVID cases in the Bronx, the demand for vaccine access is on the rise.
“We get a phone call at least once a day,” said Pilgrim Pharmacy co-owner Mike Coscia. “People ask, do you have it?”
It’s not so clear when Pilgrim will be able to push the needle. The FDA rolled out new regulations limiting access to the COVID -19 vaccine for Americans over 65 years old or for those facing health risks.
Coscia says the country is facing an accessibility issue—vaccine deliveries haven’t been reaching pharmacies.
Friday morning, Gov. Kathy Hochul clashed with the FDA, signing an executive order allowing pharmacies to give the shot to anyone.
“If you want your child to have a COVID shot, it should be available to you and it should be covered by insurance,” said Hochul. “Extreme times call for extreme measures.”
Despite that order, Coscia says confusion around the COVID shot remains.
“If there are conflicting rules, there’s still a question as to whether these vaccines will be covered to be administered in the pharmacy.”
The executive order remains in effect until Oct. 5, giving the federal government 30 days to decide what’s next. Coscia hopes that with this mandate, pharmacies can start getting COVID vaccines in stock by next week.
