Bronx remembers WWII Soldier Walter Fufidio on Memorial Day
The family said Memorial Day is not just about remembering Fufidio but also honoring all the men and women who served in battle.

This year marks 80 years since the end of World War II, and its effects continue to have a lasting impact in the Bronx.
More than a dozen people gathered Monday at St. Raymond’s Cemetery to honor Walter Fufidio, a World War II veteran who served in the Marines.
There was a gun salute from the color guard and a wreath was laid at Fufidio’s gravesite on Monday.
Fufidio, a native of Hunts Point, enlisted in the Marines at the age of 19.
His nephew, George Fufidio, shared the story of his uncle’s sacrifice in 1945.
“My grandparents really didn’t know much. He was able to write a letter before he left. He couldn’t tell them where he was going. It wasn’t until they received a telegram telling them he had been killed that they even knew he was at Iwo Jima,” said George Fufidio.
