A Brooklyn mother says that the conditions inside her New York City Housing Authority apartment are so bad that it is putting her family’s health and safety at risk.
Kaylan Gray says that dirty water has been leaking into her apartment from the bathroom and kitchen ceiling for years now, forcing her to put buckets around her house and leave a dehumidifier on 24/7.
“It smells like waste. I can’t even describe it to you, like moldy, mildew. Really nasty,” said Gray. “Sometimes if I don’t catch it in time, it’ll stick to my sink, my floors… I have to go in with bleach.”
She says the water comes from leaky pipes that cause mold and pieces of the wall to fall off, causing her to fear for her family’s health.
Gray’s wall was fully replaced by NYCHA in 2021, but before anyone could come to paint the new wall, water began to come down again, and Gray says within months she was back to square one.
Gray says she’s now begging NYCHA to transfer her to another apartment within the complex before her health or her children’s health is seriously impacted.
News 12 has reached out to NYCHA for a statement and is awaiting a response.
