Police have arrested an 18-year-old in connection with the deadly stabbing of Michael Hernandez, a 27-year-old man killed near Barclays Center earlier this month.
Noah Rentas, 18, was taken into custody on Tuesday, March 25, around 5 p.m. at the 78th Precinct in Brooklyn. He is charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
According to police, Hernandez was stabbed multiple times in the abdomen on March 14 near the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Flatbush Avenue. Investigators say a large group had gathered outside the Atlantic Terminal Mall before the attack, and multiple people fled the scene after Hernandez was stabbed.
As Rentas was being escorted from the precinct Tuesday evening, Hernandez’s mother, Marisol Miranda, shouted, “Why did you murder my son?”
"What morals, what respect are you teaching these kids? He must’ve done it before and got away with it. My son meant the world to me, and this is why you see my face here—every single one of them gets arrested,” she told News 12.
Police say they are still searching for others in connection with Hernandez’s death. The investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
