First responders gathered Sunday at a bunting ceremony at Public Safety Answering Center II in the Bronx to honor EMT Frederick D. Whiteside, who died Friday after experiencing cardiac arrest while working at the 911 dispatch center.
Whiteside, a 22-year FDNY veteran from Brooklyn, began his career with the FDNY on April 19, 2002, and worked in Brooklyn and the Bronx. He had been working with EMS dispatch since 2019.
“Our hearts are heavy over the loss of EMT Whiteside,” said Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh in a statement. “We are saddened by his sudden passing and join his family and friends in mourning his loss.”
“EMT Whiteside spent his career helping those in need, saving lives of New Yorkers,” said Mayor Eric Adams in a statement.
